Our First Catio

When the client wants a place for their cat to roam outside-but-not-outside, what better place than by extending the back porch? This was quite the project for Derek and I as we wrestled some large lumber around. This went pretty smoothly until we reached the installation of the skylights. Oh skylights! With the goal of this covered porch area to eventually be completely enclosed, we were quite nervous about adding three of these leak machines.

Seriously, after thousands of home inspections and plenty of experience in repairs between the two of us, we know just how notorious skylights are for letting water in. Most of the time the installer just didn’t follow proper water drainage rules. But sometimes, they just leak. So we spent half of that day making sure every step was followed to a T. Here’s to a dry roof!

It seems “catios,” or patio for a cat, are becoming more popular in the city. They allow the cat to wander some outside but not be allowed in the wild. While this may sound silly to some, owners with cats that have been declawed understand. As a result of this demand, we are developing a modular system for constructing catios to customer request. Stay tuned for more of these.
